HOW COULD YOU? By Jim Willis, 2001

When I was a puppy, I entertained you with my antics and made you laugh. You called me your child, and despite a number of chewed shoes and a couple of murdered throw pillows, I became your best friend.

Whenever I was "bad," you'd shake your finger at me and ask "How could you?" -- but then you'd relent and roll me over for a bellyrub. My housebreaking took a little longer than expected, because you were terribly busy, but we worked on that together.

I remember those nights of nuzzling you in bed and listening to your confidences and secret dreams, and I believed that life could not be any more perfect. We went for long walks and runs in the park, car rides, stops for ice cream (I only got the cone because "ice cream is bad for dogs" you said), and I took long naps in the sun waiting for you to come home at the end of the day.

Gradually, you began spending more time at work and on your career, and more time searching for a human mate. I waited for you patiently, comforted you through heartbreaks and disappointments, never chided you about bad decisions, and romped with glee at your homecomings, and when you fell in love.

She, now your wife, is not a "dog person" -- still I welcomed her into our home, tried to show her affection, and obeyed her. I was happy because you were happy.

Then the human babies came along and I shared your excitement. I was fascinated by their pinkness, how they smelled, and I wanted to mother them, too. Only she and you worried that I might hurt them, and I spent most of my time banished to another room, or to a dog crate. Oh, how I wanted to love them, but I became a "prisoner of love."

As they began to grow, I became their friend. They clung to my fur and pulled themselves up on wobbly legs, poked fingers in my eyes, investigated my ears, and gave me kisses on my nose. I loved everything about them and their touch -- because your touch was now so infrequent -- and I would've defended them with my life if need be. I would sneak into their beds and listen to their worries and secret dreams, and together we waited for the sound of your car in the driveway.

There had been a time, when others asked you if you had a dog, that you produced a photo of me from your wallet and told them stories about me. These past few years, you just answered "yes" and changed the subject. I had gone from being "your dog" to "just a dog," and you resented every expenditure on my behalf.

Now, you have a new career opportunity in another city, and you and they will be moving to an apartment that does not allow pets. You've made the right decision for your "family," but there was a time when I was your only family.

I was excited about the car ride until we arrived at the animal shelter. It smelled of dogs and cats, of fear, of hopelessness. You filled out the paperwork and said "I know you will find a good home for her." They shrugged and gave you a pained look. They understand the realities facing a middle-aged dog, even one with "papers."

You had to pry your son's fingers loose from my collar as he screamed "No, Daddy! Please don't let them take my dog!" And I worried for him, and what lessons you had just taught him about friendship and loyalty, about love and responsibility, and about respect for all life.

You gave me a good-bye pat on the head, avoided my eyes, and politely refused to take my collar and leash with you. You had a deadline to meet and now I have one, too. After you left, the two nice ladies said you probably knew about your upcoming move months ago and made no attempt to find me another good home. They shook their heads and asked "How could you?"

They are as attentive to us here in the shelter as their busy schedules allow. They feed us, of course, but I lost my appetite days ago. At first, whenever anyone passed my pen, I rushed to the front, hoping it was you that you had changed your mind -- that this was all a bad dream... or I hoped it would at least be someone who cared, anyone who might save me.

When I realized I could not compete with the frolicking for attention of happy puppies, oblivious to their own fate, I retreated to a far corner and waited. I heard her footsteps as she came for me at the end of the day, and I padded along the aisle after her to a separate room.

A blissfully quiet room. She placed me on the table and rubbed my ears, and told me not to worry. My heart pounded in anticipation of what was to come, but there was also a sense of relief. The prisoner of love had run out of days. As is my nature, I was more concerned about her. The burden which she bears weighs heavily on her, and I know that, the same way I knew your every mood.

She gently placed a tourniquet around my foreleg as a tear ran down her cheek. I licked her hand in the same way I used to comfort you so many years ago. She expertly slid the hypodermic needle into my vein. As I felt the sting and the cool liquid coursing through my body, I lay down sleepily, looked into her kind eyes and murmured "How could you?"

Perhaps because she understood my dog speak, she said "I'm so sorry." She hugged me, and hurriedly explained it was her job to make sure I went to a better place, where I wouldn't be ignored or abused or abandoned, or have to fend for myself -- a place of love and light so very different from this earthly place.

And with my last bit of energy, I tried to convey to her with a thump of my tail that my "How could you?" was not directed at her. It was directed at you, My Beloved Master, I was thinking of you. I will think of you and wait for you forever. May everyone in your life continue to show you so much loyalty.

Going to be a Long Post

Firstly, New Year Eve, Went to k box in the afternoon, cost 28bucks per person, its super ex.Sang till 6plus and left off first because need to go over to a new year countdown at gombak pet store. Pictures of the countdown taken by Joanne(takara pets) Cant really see my face in the picture, was very dark out there and i blended in i guess? LOL. enjoyed the countdown! Lots of dogs there very fun! Cookie keep on humming other dogs regardless male or female, very sick! lol.

Next Thus , went over to jewel house to clear homework, manage to clear abit,played monopoly for quite a while after we did some of our work. They ganged up against me but i never lose lol, zifeng bankrupt 1st! hahaha!

Fri~First day of school, Freaking bad day for me, i dun ******* , yesh i realli not happy leh, cannot ah, catch this catch that like u form teacher like that. Damn too lan! Now i am sitting in the front of the class, okay hopefully can improve on my results can pay more attention in front i guess? Hmm alot of homework still not clear and clearing as fast as i can.

Math teacher is miss susan lim, she was a good teacher=D lol zhouyou argued with her cause he never go for his math test, lol.

Basketball training(duno why i starting to like basketball more and more liao) very fun, but when miss ho came and asked huangkai to take the L1R5 of those who get into the team, i damn scared la hopefully she dun get me out of the team because i did badly last year... i want to play with the team!~

Sat~morning went basketball with niwen leo weijie and hh, played till afternoon and ate with niwen leo and weijie chatted alot , talk about alot and stuff and chiong home and did my stuff and rush out again to meet elene to clear up my maths. took cab over~ cost me 5bucks lol. studyed till around 6pm went to eat kfc and then went to arcade for awhile, played the basketball machine and played like shit haha duno why. play photo hunt too.

Today~ Staying home to chiong hmwk, hope to finish my both maths and my english compre.

Going to have a gathering at cck park on next Sunday, Going to bring cookie out again! haha, saving up to get him a new costume for him to wear. =D okay i think i want go play basketball awhile soon , end of post~

A normal Xmas eve but a GOOD deed done! =D

today was just a normal outing , haiz cant do crazy stuff like midnight movie or countdown to xmas, cause just cant find anyone to go out till so late with~

okay, first morning went to meet up with elene and zhenyi, zhenyi need to make her ic. took mrt to lavender, then went over to do her ic which only took 5mins, and we departed to orchard @ around 10am!

Reached orchard, went for kbox, rotted at cineleisure for like 30mins b4 we can get in to the kbox for k lunch, was nothing de lo all shops were close cause its still early. Went in to kbox at 11am enjoyed the singing, zhenyi dun dare to sing so she sang VERY LITTLE. (at least she sang!=D)

After kbox ,which is abt 2pm we went to play arcade, play some basketball machine, there is a high score of 250 for 2of the machines so me and elene took turns to play alt round and broke both machines highest record, we rewrite the record into 362 points and 360 points(ok not my credit i did not score alot during my turn too XD)

Catch a movie as it was still early, watched bedtime story! nice show! haha really loved it, after tt zhenyi gtg already so we went back to take mrt.

Then after tt went to gombak with elene, went to the pet shop cause i need to register my dog for the new year eve event, after tt ate there then went home.

Finally, heavy rain when i was going home, wah never bring umbrella damn wet can! then go this old man asking where is block 412 so i brought him over, he offered to share with me his umbrella but i scared he get himself wet then i never accept then i still w8 for him to walk slowly as he is quite old, ok which makes me ended up very wet. Got praised by one malay couple for helping the old man. Reached home wet drenched but happy!=D A happy day afterall

Okay Finally i decided to update!rounding up what i have done for the few weeks!(sadly i did not study:X but should be will start soon) XD

Firstly Nov.
there was non-stop bridging (my wonderful results get me into all these remedials)
Then after all the remedials -went to choir concert(with yenloong,sheena,brigitte,jolene,and some others also joined us there),went support my mei! enjoyed the concert they did well, ended around 11 went to eat and went over to jingxian house to ton cues the day after we are going over to XIAMEN.

Xiamen!
xiamen really have cooling weather , reached 11degree during one of the nite, sadly cant bring all ppl gifts as there is weight limit for bring stuff back to singapore. Training there was fun, and shopping there was more fun! everything is CHEAP(though the quality sucks-.- bought 6watches and 5out of batt after i came back to singapore)

Back from xiamen when watch winxclub with brigitte was a nice show afterall lol!enjoyed the show!!:D went afew times of kbox too!

Dec
Still did not have done anything fun yet,still planning how to spend my december, most likely going to clear up my homework. Did try go out do homework but ended up i onli done 3pages of homework. Going to EastCoast tml with (yenloong,brigitte,sheena) hope it will be fun. Sat going out with (hinho,jingxian,huangkai,yiwei,muyan) out to escape+wildwild wet!

Today~
Some problems and stuff happen, didnt went out with ch6rds to celebrate pualina b'day! happy b;dae! Went out play badminton with jewel, ended up playing 2v2 with a pair of mother and daughter. of course we won!~Kinda fun, but still pain due to sunburn yesterday!

Yesterday~
Happiness Day went to ECP with yenloong,hosin,jewel,jolene,sheena,zifeng. Fun~ Cycled for 3hours, (wasted we went to the most expensive cycle shop i guess?) any still we had fun. hardly see hosin and jol when we cycle, jol w8ing for hosin i guess? yenloong and i were taking turn to sit on the double bike with sheena(sheena duno how to ride a bike) XD sheena went crazy when she is on my bike LOL! ha, jewel was chionging all the way then zifeng was juz in the normal speedXD

Went play water at the beach, crazyness! i was dragging people into the way, yenloong go ownedLOL, jewel too! ended up got myself cramped LOL. lucky got sjab zifeng to the rescue~went bathe and eat then we went home!

Took bus to clementi which took around 2hours, 54stops! went home quite late. every1 kana sunburned! all red red one!! :D HAPPINESS!

TOTAL HAPPINESS ,went to celebrate lantern festival with friends. Yenloong,Jewel,zifeng,sheena,marcus(with tim and ss),youli,jonah,huangkai,jess,+2 of yenloong friend. ha Sat was happiness, spamming sparkles!every1 was chasing jewel with the sparkles, she ran lots of rounds!!Was enjoying playing with this little boy named Brendon(yenloong little cousin!!) haha,loved kids alot!!however tiring entertaining him XD Around 10pm, fireman came,some1 complain say got fire(wth! lameness) then policeman came too, crapped to the police left my particulas and went back! Totally fun DAY!

Sun, went play again this time played with bomb bags!placed bomb bags in yenloong shirt and pranked alot people, end up getting 2bomb bags in my bottoms and 2bomb bag in my shirt. lol wet wet wet! took nice group photo after everything ended at around 10.

went to K box with elene,jess,issac started of not that high, every1 dun dare to sing, so i started ZI-HIGHING then after that every1 was more lively then soon every1 enjoying! issac singing was very very funny! I was very high on that day, was walking around, jumping here and there totally crazy!~ Sung enjoyed and went for tuition after that!

Today
went to jewel there to play with his dog, Jack. He is very cute, except for dripping all his saliva on me.. okay but still i think very nice! ran with the dog, chatted lots about dogs. played with the cute jack! He is one big dog! very fun to play with!! thanks jewel for bringing your dog down let me play! ha, i love dogs very much!!

I duno What is this!

yesterday~
Went to Sakae Sushi with issac and jess(val did not want to eat so she went home after we went into sakae) yesterday, after the lessons, Went for the buffet for teens. Got in, settled down and started eating, issac mixed wasabi with black soy sauce, looks ewww to me but issac thinks that it is nice. Food tasted great, eaten around 15plates of sushi, i tried to take pictures of the plates that i ate but the staffs alway cleared away the plates very fast, too fast!~ The ice-cream there very nice also, like the ice-cream~. Btw Ronghao gave me viwawa 200cash! thanks!

Today~
normal school day, Miss rina was yelling her heads off when i was eating lollipop in her lessons, she saw only me eating it(there was a few others eating it also) okay so she only aimed at me, so i have no choice but to throw it away. So went back in class after i threw away my lollipop in the dust bin outside. She start asking the class 'Class if you have any sweets, chocolates,... blabla in your mouth please throw it away also!' Okay so i went to my table, take the vita soy which i had drank halfway, and show it to her!!:D after that she said 'oh great, just now lollipop and you still have drink.' i ignored and walk out of class, and finished my drink outside, SLOWLY.. I guess i am being rowdy but then what to do, i just don't like her.. Oh well forget about it.

Math lesson was fun, i think that the chapter we learning now is fun! Gotta mug hard for A-math haven't started revising. Hope i can survive for the upcoming SA2. Physics was talking my way throughout(sorry Mr.Lim) but i am really bored. Recess, (sorry to Ch6rds) i know u all won't be angry, but today too hungry so went down 1st! Ha tomorrow will wait for you all one:D

After school waited for youli for 40mins or so , serene and gah wai was teaching him POA. went home after that!~

Finally back to school, lots of homework still not clear, spending my whole holiday on TYS. Lit lessons was not that boring did some group activities(it will be better if we have another lit teacher.) MT~ OH MY GOD i only get 35/50 for my chinese. lot to valerie and jessica... Math, fun fun!~ Physics surprisingly i passed my physics test kinematics i got 19/30 happiness! 1st time never flunk my physics!~ After school went for basketball with darren and friends. Went home Gunz awhile and started mugging.Exams are coming, gotta mug hard now!~ Gotta go back to mug now!~ End post!~

TODAY-
did lots of math, math madness!~ trying to mug a little harder~. went to school for math remedial at 8am, i was a little late though. Lessons went on, and have a small break at 9.30 went out get some breakfast, back to mugging. Finally math remedial end around 11.30.

After that most of the classmate went home, only a few stayed back cues they had, math remedial, carry on doing my math, did lots of e-math question in TYS. Chem remedial end around 4?Mr Damian lobanged me , zifeng, kendra, wenqiang to eat and fetch all of us home. Of course staying nearest to him , i am the last to reach LOL!~ ha anw thanks alot for the ride!

Going for A math tuition later. Math madness Day.

did some a-math mugging around 3-4hours! about 9am till like 12.30?( still cant do alot questions, lots of question i forgotten how to do them!~) At least i tried okay!~ (However, some people doesnt give a damn about me revising, wanting me to focus on other stuff instead, hmm lets see, if i dun even get to sec4 how am i going to join u all wif the stuff~) my results now is onli 4passes...Must know that i am not like u all, i dun have good results and can spend lots of time on other things and never do anything about my studies.

Okay skip that~
AFternoon, after the revision , finally manage to get some time out, family outing wif relative at around 4.pm so went to pool from 2-4 wif wilson b4 meeting relative, get to slack awhile!~
Spent 53bucks on a shirt, damn heart pain!~

Tomorrow-
going for IMH visit, after that mugging again~ decided at least 3-4hours per day, i dun want to be retain thats for sure! trying to push myself up. May need some help so guys, pls try to teach me for A/E maths i am quite weak on those 2subs!~

Back to posting!~It has been awhile since i last posted, too many stuff to be done. Done Aces Day today, we got messed up cues there are changes to the moves and also we must start from the left instead of our right when we do our movement which is different from what we usually do.

Yesterday, went to Serene house with Ch6rds to slack , watch some shows and rot. went back home after that. Nothing much happening.

September holidays are coming but dun think i will have time to play, most enjoy myself for 1day?hardcore mugging after that!~Cant fail too much, must try to buck up!~

Today, kana Dc class~ went for dc till 3pm~went out to serene there wif Ch6rds to watch thriller~ bought alot of food to eat there!~halfway serene got paino class so she was doing her paino tuition while we carry on the show!~watched till around 6 and we went back!~

Nothing much for this few days! cant post long posts shall post longer ones when i done something fun!~ O YA!~

Today went out wif brigitte ,sheena, anita to celebrate my b'dae!~Went meet sheena and anita at bukit gombak and made our way to vivo city 1st (brigitte came around 4pm cues she went out) On the way to vivo, sheena and anita was talking about some things they plan for me and kept from me, i didnt know anything and they dun want to tell me lol, juz telling me there is a place we going after vivo, which is 'X' location~

Reached vivo, went to eat SUPERDOGS, was crapping while eating, laughed alot~ and also they talked about some digusting stuff for awhile LOL~.. okay then went shopping, cant get anything i want so i never buy anything , while anita bought some stuff~Went shopping in lots of stalls, until brigitte came.. And went to 'X' location which turns out to be sentosa(korkors paid for my tickets:D)

On the way to sentosa, i felt blur, totally duno what is happening.The 3korkors was like okay , in the X location still got 'Y' area! LOL~okay fine i am juz blur and following them!~ okay reached Y area which is= sky ride lol!~ korkors wanted to pay for me but i rejected:X.. (i juz dun want u all to spend alot!!) went for skyride, very nice! but i am holding on tight to my slippers i scared it drop off! Brigitte trying to make my slipper drop WTH lol, if drop my slippers i realli duno how to go back!LOL. Took lots of photo on the skyride!~ enjoying it~

Went slack awhile at sentosa and went back to vivo , went to find ben and jerry~Went to eat ice cream!!~Slacked at ben and jerry. Chat wif korkors and went back!!~ Ben's and jerry also celebrating their b'dae, korkors made me sing OFF PITCH b;dae song for them to get free sprinkles on the ice cream, okay sang , had lots of laughter and get sprinkles YAY LOL

Brigitte and Sheena korkors bought me a DAMN NICE BELT WIF MY NAME ON IT(NAME IS VERY BIG LA LOL) havent gave me the card cues brigitte havent written on it!~ ahhh cant w8 to read it!And some nice chocos which is very ex i guess?haha!

Yesterday
national day celebration~ went to school for the celebration, quite boring onli like the singing part LOL~ Siti gave me a present for my b'dae, HAPPY! love it alot!! haha thanks~

afterthat went to slack wif Ch6rds went to eat at desert shop, then went back to change and meet up with wilson , joanne,sihui,kailin for pool~ All enjoyed the pool except for pualina (she didnt play at all ) and youli thinks that pool is nice afterallXD went to eat lunch eat lambchop :D chat slack and everything and went home at around 5.30

at night~ went for tuition, miss chen(tuition teacher) bought 25durains (LOL) ate durains until 7.30? Realli big durain feast haha! eat untill very full~after that carry on tuition then went back home , never on9 cues grandpa watching shutter( i dun want any bad dreams at night ) went to bed.

going to mom's there to work~ shortage of $$ already no choice muz go work~haha quite fun there so i guess its okay!! haha hope i will enjoy it~

今天我想用华文写!

昨天我和 Ch6rds 一起到了 Chenqi 家~ 因为我在家没是做，所以陪了我那群好友到那去做他们的 ACES DAY~ RongHao 的舞姿真的太可爱了!! Hinho 跳得很不赖! Serene 一点点乱掉 Youli 和 Paulina 则是在那，教他们跳舞!

他们跳到了4点才肯让我看我的电视节目。在那里玩的很开心! (对不起 Marcus 因为是他们先约我的所以昨天不能陪你出去。。)

今天!

啊在家浪费了一天，等一下会和教练去看球赛! 别的国家的球队握!

明天

希望放学后可以和 Ch6rds 出去! 但大家好像很忙都有补课! 真的很烦!

Yesterday, BBQ was held to say goodbye to the shanghai friends~Very high! Every1 had a greattime. I was sick so i did not went for my cca, and i went helping out wif the bbq since 3pm!~

youli and zon finally managed to perform their beatbox!~ Ch6rds were high there! E4 too!~Around 7pm tangtang and zhuangli need to get back to their hostel.... Very sad! alot people cried too!~ I really felt sad too! both of them stayed the longest wif us!!!

Last post of the day! Need to inform some stuff b4 i go sleep~ Went to doctor juz now, having high fever of 38.6degree. Now very blur so shall not post long.Given 2daes MC by the doctor but i would try to go back school by tues, i would go and see tang tang and zhuang li for one last time if i can make it!~

Yesterday~

Apologise for not going to sentosa wif e4. Was abit sick in the morning, went to slack like 2hours wif Ch6rds. then went home already, rested at home from 2till night.~ Missed the e4 dinner cues , did not know the timing .Night went to meet the shanghainese after( jewel gave me a call) which are leaving on sundae(today) having fever!~ took wrong mrt for TWICE... Blur when sending the shanghainese back~ bought little gifts for them!(blur until for take out price tag~) LOL~ hmmm walked them to their hostel , and stayed there till near 11pm,went taking bus to the mrt station after that reached the mrt station around 11.30~ Fever rised up, so decided to share taxi wif jewel, hosin,zifeng,darren ang. Make my way home, and taken panadol and slept~

Again have to apologise for not making to the e4 outing~ hope the shanghainese have fun for the past week~( Realli Sorry for missing the outing~ those who still angry wif me i realli duno what to do, but still i am realli sick. )

Today- duno why i suddenly have a habit of hugging stuff! lol, hugged e1 bear for afew lessons, hugged pualina bag for the whole mother tongue, hugged the testtube holder during chem spa, hugged wenqiang pillow at his house! I love hugs and i duno why LOL.

Went to lot1 and slack after school with paulina chenqi wenqiang~chenqi want to get her shoes, so we went to look at shoes lol!I went to look for bags too , buying one soon! Went to eat at pizza hut! Crapped alot there, We onli like to talk rubbish LOL! Fun Fun Fun! didnt stay long in there cues we are rushing for time!

Went to watch horror after that.Watched the sisters, not scary one++no link!! hmm this time really not scary no1 get freak out, maybe because dun have serene and youli bah!(youli need to stay back for remedial and serene need go for her cca stuff) we need u 2 man!! so we can feel scared LOL!

Hm orchard! Going to orchard soon!~ again wif my clique! They Rawked except for being humji during horror movies!!

O and next week! maybe opening my house to my clique, maybe they could come over to watch horror movie!(if really no other house to go!
